Start with Starter: 8 short lessons that teach hiragana and katakana from zero, with romaji to help you until you can read them. The N5 lessons are written in kana without romaji, so Starter comes first. Starter Lesson 1

Start at the first level where this is true:
- N5 You can read hiragana and katakana but have not studied grammar yet. Lesson 1 starts with です (A is B). N5 Lesson 1
- N4 You know the N5 grammar: polite and plain forms, the て-, ない- and た-forms, giving and receiving, and the N5 kanji. Lesson 1 starts with the potential form (can do). N4 Lesson 1
- N3 You know the N4 grammar: the potential, passive and causative forms, the four ways to say if (と, ば, たら, なら) and polite keigo. Lesson 1 starts with 〜中, 〜ぶりに and 〜ずつ. N3 Lesson 1
- N2 You know the N3 grammar, such as 〜ために and 〜ように, 〜によって and 〜に対して, and 〜わけだ and 〜べきだ, and you can read plain-form news. Lesson 1 starts with 〜て以来 and 〜つつ ある. N2 Lesson 1
- N1 You know the N2 grammar, such as 〜からこそ, 〜ざるを得ない and 〜にほかならない, and you can read newspaper-style reporting. Lesson 1 starts with 〜てからというもの and 〜を経て. N1 Lesson 1

- You read the same conversation again, and this time you understand it.
- You take a short test and need 80% to pass. Questions you missed earlier in the lesson come back here.
- Anything you still get wrong comes back in later lessons until you get it right.
