Japanese from zero · N3 Lesson 3

In order to

〜ために ・ 〜ように ・ 〜には ・ なるべく

In this lesson, you will learn to say why you do something with 〜ために, what result you want to make possible with 〜ように, what a goal takes with 〜には, and to say 'as much as possible' with なるべく. Matsumoto gives Lisa her first assignment for the newspaper club, and Minju helps her get ready.

By the end you will be able to say

I'll interview an exchange student for the May issue.
I'll ask simply, so that the other person can answer.
To write a good article, you need to prepare.
I'll keep my questions as short as possible.
I'll write the answers down so that I don't forget them.

The grammar in this lesson

  1. 〜ために — in order to; for — Dictionary form + ために, or noun + の ために, says what an action is for.
  2. 〜ように — so that — A verb you cannot simply choose (can, understand, not forget) + ように says what result you want to make possible.
  3. 〜には — in order to (with a judgment) — Dictionary form + には, then what it takes (必要だ, 大事だ, いい), says what a goal needs.
  4. なるべく — as much as possible — なるべく before a verb or an adverb means 'as much as you can; if you can'.
