Japanese from zero · N2 Lesson 5
Sakura's news
〜て たまらない/〜て ならない ・ 〜ないでは いられない ・ 〜ことか ・ 〜ことに
In this lesson, you will learn to say a feeling is too strong to bear with 〜て たまらない and 〜て ならない, that you cannot stop yourself from doing something with 〜ないでは いられない, to exclaim how much or how often with 〜ことか, and to put your feeling about a fact first with 〜ことに (残念な ことに, 幸いな ことに). In May, Sakura's painting is chosen for an exhibition in Tokyo.
By the end you will be able to say
うれしくて たまらない。I'm so happy I can hardly stand it.
はじめての 展覧会で、不安で なりません。It's my first exhibition, and I can't stop worrying.
うれしくて、言わないでは いられない。I'm so happy I can't help telling people.
何度 やめようと 思った ことか。How many times I thought of giving up!
幸いな ことに、画廊は 東京に あります。Fortunately, the gallery is in Tokyo.
The grammar in this lesson
- 〜て たまらない/〜て ならない — unbearably; can't help feeling — A feeling or a sensation in the て-form + たまらない or ならない says it is too strong to hold back.
- 〜ないでは いられない — can't help doing — A verb's ない form + では いられない says you cannot stop yourself from doing it.
- 〜ことか — how much ...!; how many times ...! — A plain form + ことか, with a word like どんなに or 何度, exclaims how strong or how often something was.
- 〜ことに — (sadly, luckily, surprisingly) ... — An adjective or a verb of feeling + ことに, at the start, gives your feeling about the fact that follows.
