Hiragana 1: あ か さ

あいうえお · かきくけこ · さしすせそ

In this lesson, you will learn your first 15 hiragana: the five vowels, then the k-row and the s-row, which are the same vowels with a consonant in front. By the end you can read real words (red, face, morning, umbrella) and your first name: あい.

By the end you will be able to say

red
face
morning
umbrella
Ai: a name you can now read (Tanaka's older sister, in the lessons)

The grammar in this lesson

  1. あ い う え お: the five vowels — a, i, u, e, o. Every other letter ends in one of these.
  2. か き く け こ: the k-row — k + each vowel: ka, ki, ku, ke, ko.
  3. さ し す せ そ: the s-row — s + each vowel, with one surprise: し is shi.
