Comparing

AはBより ・ 〜の ほうが ・ AとBと どちらが ・ 〜の中で〜が いちばん ・ 同じ/ちがう

In this lesson, you will learn to compare two things, to ask which of two is bigger or better, to say which one of many is the most, and to say that things are the same or different, as Lisa and Minju compare their hometowns, Seattle and Seoul, with Japan.

By the end you will be able to say

Seattle is bigger than Midori-machi.
In summer, Midori-machi is the hotter one.
Which do you like better, Tokyo or Osaka?
Of all fruit, I like apples best.
Seoul and Tokyo are about the same size.

The grammar in this lesson

  1. AはBより: A is more … than B — AはBより + adjective says A is more so than B.
  2. 〜の ほうが: the more … one — Noun + の ほうが points at the winner of a comparison of two.
  3. AとBと どちらが: which of the two? — AとBと どちらが … ですか asks which of two things is more so.
  4. 〜の中で 〜が いちばん: the most of all — Xの 中で Yが いちばん … says Y is the most of a group of three or more.
  5. 同じ / ちがう: the same, different — 同じ says two things are the same; ちがいます says they are different.
