Japanese from zero · N4 Lesson 25

What you need

〜が 必要 ・ 〜必要が ある ・ 〜から 作る ・ 〜は〜が、〜は ・ 〜より

In this lesson, you will learn to say what you need and what you need to do (〜が 必要です, 〜必要が あります), what something is made from (〜から 作る), how to set two things side by side with は (〜は〜が、〜は), and to compare with より. You will go to the immigration office with Lisa and Mr. Sato to find out what she needs to stay in Japan another year.

By the end you will be able to say

You need your passport and a photo.
You need to get documents from the university.
This tea is made from leaves from this town.
I have my passport, but I don't have a photo.
The shop in front of the station is cheaper than here.

The grammar in this lesson

  1. Need: 〜が 必要です / 〜必要が あります — A noun + が 必要です is something you need; a plain verb + 必要が あります is something you need to do.
  2. Made from: 〜から 作る — から after a material says what something is made from when the material changes into something new.
  3. This one, but that one: 〜は〜が、〜は — When you set two things side by side, each one takes は, and が in the middle means 'but'.
  4. Than: 〜より (review) — Bより puts B on the lower side of a comparison: A is more … than B.
