Japanese from zero · N3 Lesson 27

As things change

〜につれて ・ 〜にしたがって ・ 〜と共に ・ 〜一方だ

In this lesson, you will learn to say that one thing changes as another changes, that you act following a rule, that something goes along with something else, and that a trend just keeps going one way. Lisa tells Minju about the article she is writing on how みどり町 is getting older.

By the end you will be able to say

As young people leave for the city, the town is getting quiet.
I write articles following the rules.
The town changes with the times.
The shops just keep getting fewer.
As the young people get fewer, shops are closing.

The grammar in this lesson

  1. 〜につれて — as (one thing changes, another changes with it) — Verb (dictionary form) + につれて says that as one thing changes, another changes along with it.
  2. 〜にしたがって — as; following (a rule) — にしたがって works like につれて for two changes, and it can also mean 'following' a rule, a plan or an instruction.
  3. 〜と 共に — together with; along with — Noun + と 共に means 'together with' someone, or that something changes along with something else.
  4. 〜一方だ — keeps getting more and more — Verb (dictionary form) + 一方だ says that a change keeps going one way, usually a way the speaker doesn't like.
