N5 · Lesson 18

The person who…

sentence + noun ・ adjective + noun ・ 〜とき ・ 〜人/もの/ところ

In this lesson, you will learn to describe people, things and places with a whole sentence in front of the noun (the person wearing a black coat, the umbrella I use every day), and to say when something happened with 〜とき, as Lisa and Minju look for the man who took Lisa's umbrella.

By the end you will be able to say

Who is the person wearing a black coat?
Did you see a tall man?
I put my umbrella down when I was buying my ticket.
When I was a child, I lived in Osaka.
This is a quiet place, isn't it?

The grammar in this lesson

  1. Sentence + noun: 着て いる 人 (the person who is wearing…) — A clause ending in a plain-form verb, put right before a noun, describes that noun.
  2. Adjective + noun: 背が 高い 人, 有名な 人, 医者の 母 — い-adjectives, な-adjectives with な, nouns with の, and short が clauses all describe a noun.
  3. 〜とき: when — A plain verb, an い-adjective, a な-adjective with な, or a noun with の before とき says when something happens.
  4. 〜人, 〜もの, 〜ところ: the person, the thing, the place — A describing clause before 人, もの or ところ talks about a person, a thing or a place.
