Japanese from zero · N4 Lesson 6

Try it and see

〜て みる ・ 〜て いく/〜て くる ・ 〜て いた ・ 〜く/〜に なって きた

In this lesson, you will learn to say that you will try something to see how it is, to say that you will go and do something and come back, to talk about what was going on in the past, and to say that something has started to change, like the weather in autumn. You will cook miso soup with おばあちゃん, the grandmother in Lisa's host family.

By the end you will be able to say

I want to try making miso soup.
Please try adding a little miso.
I'll go buy bread at the station and come back.
In Seattle, I used to watch a cooking show every week.
It's gotten cold, hasn't it?

The grammar in this lesson

  1. Try it and see: 〜て みる — て-form + みます says you try doing something to see how it is.
  2. Go and come: 〜て いく/〜て くる — て-form + いきます or きます adds a direction: going on from here, or coming back here.
  3. Was doing: 〜て いた — 〜て いました (casual 〜て いた) is the past of 〜て います: what was going on, or a habit back then.
  4. It's getting colder: 〜く/〜に なって きた — 〜く/〜に なって きました says a change has started and is still going on.
