N5 · Lesson 12

What I want

〜たい ・ 〜が 欲しい ・ 〜に 行きます ・ 〜ましょうか

In this lesson, you will learn to say what you want to do and what you want to have, to say where you are going and why, and to offer to do something for someone. Suzuki-sensei has big news for the class: a summer trip to Hokkaido.

By the end you will be able to say

I want to go to Hokkaido.
I want a new camera.
I'm going to go eat some good fish.
Shall I carry your bags?
What do you want to eat over summer vacation?

The grammar in this lesson

  1. 〜たい — want to do — Swap a verb's ます for たい to say what you want to do: 行きます → 行きたいです.
  2. 〜が 欲しい — want a thing — A thing + が 欲しいです says you want to have it.
  3. 〜に 行きます — go to do — A verb with ます dropped, + に 行きます, says what you are going somewhere to do.
  4. 〜ましょうか — shall I…? — Swap ます for ましょうか to offer to do something for someone; with いっしょに it suggests doing it together.
