Japanese from zero · N3 Lesson 13

No use, no choice

〜しかない ・ 〜てもしょうがない / 〜ても始まらない ・ 〜てしょうがない ・ 〜ている場合じゃない

In this lesson, you will learn to say there is no choice but to do something with 〜しかない, that doing something is no use with 〜てもしょうがない and 〜ても始まらない, that a feeling is too strong to bear with 〜てしょうがない, and that this is no time for something with 〜ている場合じゃない. Lisa visits Ryo at the convenience store late at night, and he gives her some advice.

By the end you will be able to say

There's nothing for it but to talk tomorrow.
There's no use worrying about it alone.
I can't stop thinking about it.
This is no time to be brooding.
Thinking about it won't get you anywhere.

The grammar in this lesson

  1. 〜しか ない — there's no choice but to — Dictionary form + しか ない means 'there is nothing to do but this'.
  2. 〜ても しょうがない / 〜ても 始まらない — it's no use — The ても-form + しょうがない (or 始まらない) says doing something won't help.
  3. 〜て しょうがない — so much I can't stand it — The て-form + しょうがない (no も) says a feeling is too strong to stop.
  4. 〜て いる 場合じゃない — this is no time to be — 〜て いる 場合じゃない says 'this is no time to be doing that'.
