Japanese from zero · N2 Lesson 9
The interview
〜からこそ ・ interview keigo ・ 〜にほかならない ・ 〜かねる ・ 〜ざるを得ない
In this lesson, you will learn to speak in an interview: 〜からこそ for 'precisely because', the keigo an applicant uses (御社, 弊社, 存じます, 申し上げます, 〜させて いただきます), 〜にほかならない for 'is nothing other than', 〜かねる for a polite 'I can't', and 〜ざるを得ない for 'I have no choice but to'. Lisa has her internship interview with 森部長 and a woman from personnel.
By the end you will be able to say
貿易の 仕事が したいからこそ、御社を 志望いたしました。It is precisely because I want to work in trade that I chose your company.
御社の 説明会に 参加させて いただきました。I attended your company's information session.
この 経験こそ、私の 長所にほかなりません。This experience is exactly what my strength is.
今は まだ、断りかねる ことが 多いです。Right now, I still often find it hard to say no.
正直に 申し上げざるを得ません。I have no choice but to tell you honestly.
The grammar in this lesson
- 〜からこそ — precisely because — A reason + からこそ says this, and no other, is the real reason: したいからこそ (precisely because I want to).
- Interview keigo — 御社, 弊社, 存じます, 申し上げます, 〜させて いただきます — In an interview you raise the company (御社) and lower yourself: 存じます for 思う or 知って いる, 申し上げます for 言う, 〜させて いただきます for 'I will, with your permission'.
- 〜にほかならない — is nothing other than; is exactly — A noun + にほかならない says firmly that this, and nothing else, is what something is.
- 〜かねる — cannot (do), politely — A verb's ます stem + かねます is the polite, business way to say you cannot do something: お答えしかねます (I'm afraid I can't answer).
- 〜ざるを得ない — have no choice but to — A verb's ない stem + ざるを得ない says you must do it whether you like it or not: 認めざるを得ない (I have to admit it).
