Things change

〜く/に なります ・ 〜く/に します ・ もう/まだ ・ まだ〜て いません ・ 〜く/〜に (how)

In this lesson, you will learn to say how things have changed, to make something a certain way and to choose what you will have, to say 'already', 'still' and 'not yet', and to say how something is done, as the class finally arrives in Hokkaido.

By the end you will be able to say

My Japanese has gotten good.
I'll have the fish.
Have you eaten dinner yet?
I haven't eaten yet.
I'll get up early tomorrow.

The grammar in this lesson

  1. もう / まだ: already, still — もう with a past verb means 'already'; まだ with a plain statement means 'still'.
  2. まだ 〜て いません: not yet — まだ + て-form + いません says something has not happened yet.
  3. 〜く/に なります: become — い-adjective く + なります, or な-adjective / noun + に なります, says something changed.
  4. 〜く/に します, 〜に します: make it, decide on — く/に + します makes something a certain way; noun + に します decides on it.
  5. 早く, 静かに: how something is done — An い-adjective with く or a な-adjective with に goes before a verb to say how.
