The internship posting

〜を問わず ・ 〜に限らず ・ 〜のみならず ・ 〜に応じて

In this lesson, you will learn to read a job posting: 〜を問わず for 'regardless of', 〜に限らず for 'not limited to', 〜のみならず for 'not only ... but also', and 〜に応じて for 'according to'. At home, Lisa and Minju read the posting for the summer internship at Ai's company, and Minju tells Lisa about a decision of her own.

By the end you will be able to say

Anyone can apply, whatever their nationality.
Japanese is welcome, and so are other foreign languages.
This job is popular with working adults as well as students.
The company pays according to the number of days worked.
The interns' work is decided according to their skills.

  2. 〜に限らず — not limited to; not only — A noun + に限らず says the thing named is one example, and others are included too.
  3. 〜のみならず — not only ... but also (formal) — X のみならず Y も says X is true and Y is true as well; it is the formal, written だけでなく.
  4. 〜に応じて — according to; to match — A noun + に応じて says one thing changes to match another: 日数に応じて (according to the number of days).
