Katakana 1: ア to ノ

アイウエオ · カキクケコ · サシスセソ · タチツテト · ナニヌネノ

In this lesson, you will meet katakana, the sharp-edged script for words from other languages, and learn its first 25 letters. They are the same sounds you already know, so this goes fast. You will also learn the long-vowel bar ー, which katakana uses instead of a second vowel.

By the end you will be able to say

tennis
skiing
cake
Canada
necktie

The grammar in this lesson

  1. Why katakana, and the long-vowel bar — Same sounds, sharper shapes, for foreign words and names; ー holds a vowel.
  2. ア to ソ — The vowels, the k-row and the s-row in katakana.
  3. タ to ノ — The t-row and the n-row in katakana.
