Japanese from zero · N4 Lesson 22

Whether to stay

〜かどうか ・ 〜こと ・ 〜ことが ある ・ 〜のは〜だ ・ 〜という こと

In this lesson, you will learn to say whether or not something is so (〜かどうか), to turn an action into a noun with こと, to say that something happens sometimes (〜ことが ある), to save the important part of a sentence for the end (〜のは〜だ), and to talk about a fact or what something means (〜という こと). You will read the letter Lisa writes to her parents about a big decision.

By the end you will be able to say

I haven't decided yet whether to stay in Japan.
Studying Japanese is fun.
I sometimes get lonely.
What worries me most is university.
I heard that there's a test next week.

The grammar in this lesson

  1. Whether or not: 〜かどうか — A plain form + かどうか puts a yes/no question inside a longer sentence: 'whether or not'.
  2. Doing as a thing: 〜こと — A plain verb + こと turns an action into a noun you can use with は, が or を.
  3. Sometimes: 〜ことが ある — A plain present verb + ことが あります says something happens sometimes.
  4. The one that…is: 〜のは〜だ — Turn the first part into a noun with の, then name the answer with だ or です.
  5. The fact that: 〜という こと — A plain sentence + という こと makes the whole sentence one noun: 'the fact that…', or 'it means that…'.
