Japanese from zero · N3 Lesson 22
No wonder
In this lesson, you will learn to say 'no wonder' and 'so that's why' with 〜わけだ, to say 'it's not that…' with 〜わけではない, to say 'there's no way' with 〜わけが ない, to say 'not necessarily' with 〜とは 限らない, and to give a careful yes with 〜ない ことは ない. Ryo asks Minju straight out whether she likes Tanaka.
By the end you will be able to say
So that's why you were down.
It's not that I dislike it.
There's no way Ryo is serious.
Expensive things aren't necessarily good.
It's not that I won't go, but...
The grammar in this lesson
- No wonder, so that's why: 〜わけだ — Plain form + わけだ draws the conclusion that makes sense of a fact: 'no wonder', 'so that's why'.
- It's not that…: 〜わけではない — Plain form + わけではない (casual わけじゃない) says that a conclusion someone might draw is not quite true.
- There's no way: 〜わけが ない — Plain form + わけが ない says the speaker is sure something is not so: 'there's no way'.
- Not necessarily: 〜とは 限らない — Plain form + とは 限らない says that what people expect is not always true.
- A careful yes: 〜ない ことは ない — ない form + ことは ない means 'it's not that I can't (or won't)': a hesitant yes.
