Osaka

きっと ・ 〜の 中で ・ さすが ・ 〜と 言っても いい ・ ぜひ

In this lesson, you will learn to say you're sure something will happen (きっと), to pick the best of a group (〜の 中で), to praise someone for being just as good as you expected (さすが), to make a big claim politely (〜と 言っても いい), and to warmly urge someone to do something (ぜひ). You meet Tanaka's grandmother in Osaka, and Tanaka's Kansai dialect slips out.

By the end you will be able to say

Please, do eat.
I'm sure my grandmother will be happy.
Of all the seasons, I like winter best.
Just what you'd expect from Osaka.
You could say Osaka is a city of food.

The grammar in this lesson

  1. Surely, I bet: きっと — きっと says you're almost sure something is or will be true.
  2. Of all…: 〜の 中で 〜が いちばん — Group + の 中で picks the top one from a group.
  3. Just as expected: さすが — さすが praises someone or something for being as good as you expected.
  4. You could say: 〜と 言っても いい — 〜と 言っても いい makes a big claim in a soft way: 'you could even say…'.
  5. By all means: ぜひ — ぜひ warmly urges someone to do something, or says you'd love to do it.
