Japanese from zero · N4 Lesson 23

Becoming able

〜ように なる ・ 〜ように する ・ 〜く する/〜に する ・ 〜に 気が 付く

In this lesson, you will learn to say what you have slowly become able to do (〜ように なる), what you make a point of doing (〜ように する), how you change things around you (音を 小さく する, コーヒーに する), and what you suddenly notice (〜に 気が 付く). You will watch the evening news with the Satos the night Lisa finds she understands it.

By the end you will be able to say

I've gotten so I can understand the news in Japanese.
I'll make a point of reading one article every day.
Please turn the TV down.
I'll have coffee.
I noticed that my ticket was gone.

The grammar in this lesson

  1. Come to, become able: 〜ように なる — A plain form + ように なる says something changed slowly until it became true, often with a potential form.
  2. Make a point of: 〜ように する — A plain form + ように する means you make an effort to do something, or not to do it.
  3. Make it so: 〜く する / 〜に する — An い-adjective + く する or a な-adjective + に する means someone makes something that way; a noun + に する means 'I'll have…'.
  4. Notice: 〜に 気が 付く — Noun + に 気が 付く means you notice something; for a whole sentence, add こと.
