an N1 passage ・ the claim and the facts ・ exam-style questions ・ the level's forms ・ はじめまして again
In this lesson, you will learn to read an N1-length passage the way the exam asks you to: follow what each paragraph does, find the speaker's claim and sort it from the facts, answer the usual question types without falling for the traps, and recognize the forms of the whole level. The passage is Lisa's talk to the new exchange students at あおば大学. You will also learn to choose your words for the listener, the way Lisa does outside the classroom when she meets a new student named Anna.
By the end you will be able to say
The grammar in this lesson
- The passage: reading an N1 talk paragraph by paragraph — Read a long passage one paragraph at a time and ask what each one does: introduce, tell the facts, turn, claim, close.
- Finding the speaker's claim and the facts — Facts say what happened; the claim says what the speaker wants you to think or do. In a talk, look for 〜て ください, 〜ものだ and 〜必要は ありません.
- Exam-style questions: what is asked, what is a trap — Know what each question type asks (趣旨, 下線, 内容と 合う, 該当する もの) and the usual traps.
- The forms in the passage, recapped — The talk uses forms from across the course; knowing them makes the passage fast.
- はじめまして again: words chosen for the listener — The same first meeting can be said many ways; choose the words the person in front of you can take in.
