Presenting to Mr. Mori

〜からすると ・ 〜から 見ると/〜から 言うと ・ 〜上 (じょう) ・ 〜の 上では

In this lesson, you will learn to give a judgment from someone's point of view with 〜からすると, to say how things look from one side or in terms of one standard with 〜から 見ると and 〜から 言うと, to say 'in terms of' with 〜上 (じょう), and to say what the figures show on paper with 〜の 上では. On the last day of her internship, Lisa presents her research to Mr. Mori and his team.

By the end you will be able to say

According to the data, young workers are increasing.
Seen from the company's side, it's a good change.
From the workers' point of view, it's hard work.
Japanese for work is difficult.
I gave a presentation on the labor shortage at ports.

The grammar in this lesson

  1. 〜からすると / 〜からすれば — from the point of view of; judging from — Noun + からすると (or からすれば) gives the position or the evidence a judgment comes from.
  2. 〜から 見ると / 〜から 言うと — seen from; in terms of — Noun + から 見ると means 'seen from that side'; noun + から 言うと means 'in terms of that standard'.
  3. 〜上 (じょう) — in terms of; for reasons of — A noun + 上, read じょう, means 'in terms of' or 'for reasons of' it: 仕事上, 法律上.
  4. 〜の 上では — on paper; according to — Noun + の 上では says what figures, plans or records show, often before a 'but' about real life.
