The phone call

果たして ・ それなら ・ そうすると ・ 〜中を/〜中では ・ 〜甲斐がある

In this lesson, you will learn to wonder whether something really happened with 果たして, to answer what someone has just told you with それなら, to say what follows from something with そうすると, to talk about doing something in the middle of the rain or a busy day with 〜中を and about one group with 〜中では, and to say an effort was worth it with 〜甲斐が ある. It is late March, and Lisa is waiting for the result of her final interview.

By the end you will be able to say

I wonder if I really passed.
I'm sorry to trouble you when you're busy.
In that case, tonight we celebrate.
All that hard work was worth it.
The official papers will arrive at a later date.

The grammar in this lesson

  1. 果たして — really? I wonder whether — 果たして opens a question you can't answer yet: 'did it really ...?', 'I wonder whether ...'.
  2. それなら — if that's the case; then — それなら answers what someone has just told you, with your decision, suggestion or advice.
  3. そうすると — if you do that; that means — そうすると follows an action or a fact and says what results from it or what it means.
  4. 〜中を / 〜中では — in the middle of; among — 〜中を is doing something in the middle of rain or a busy time; 〜中では picks out one group and says something about it.
  5. 〜甲斐が ある — it was worth it — A verb's た-form + 甲斐が あった says an effort paid off; 甲斐が なかった says it was for nothing.
