The group discussion

〜にせよ/〜にしろ ・ 〜にしろ〜にしろ ・ 〜にしても〜にしても ・ あるいは ・ 〜はともかく

In this lesson, you will learn to say 'even if' and 'whatever' with 〜にせよ and 〜にしろ, 'whether A or B' with 〜にしろ〜にしろ and 〜にしても〜にしても, to offer another choice with あるいは, and to set one thing aside for now with 〜はともかく. Lisa takes part in a group discussion at Ai's company, the next step of the early selection.

By the end you will be able to say

Either way, let's reach a conclusion today.
Whether you're for or against, you need a reason.
For the company and the workers alike, language is a big problem.
Let's think about whether to hire more people or bring in machines.
Never mind the conclusion; shall we look at the numbers first?

The grammar in this lesson

  1. 〜にせよ / 〜にしろ — even if; whatever — にせよ and にしろ mean 'even if it is so'; after a question word they mean 'whatever' or 'whichever'.
  2. 〜にしろ〜にしろ — whether A or B — にしろ after each of two choices says 'whether A or B, the same thing holds'.
  3. 〜にしても〜にしても — A and B alike — にしても after each of two sides says the same thing holds for both.
  4. あるいは — or; or perhaps — あるいは joins two choices like または, and can start a sentence that offers another possibility.
  5. 〜はともかく — never mind; setting aside — A noun + はともかく sets that thing aside for now to talk about something more pressing.
