Mori's yes

〜というわけではない ・ 〜にかかったら ・ さもないと ・ 〜ても知らない ・ およそ

In this lesson, you will learn to correct a conclusion someone might draw with 〜という わけでは ない, to say that in someone's hands anyone ends up a certain way with 〜にかかったら, to warn what will happen otherwise with さもないと, to tell someone the consequences are on them with 〜ても 知らない, and to give a rough number with およそ. A week after the presentation, Mori gives Lisa the executives' answer.

By the end you will be able to say

It's not that the executives fully trust it.
I'll show results in about six months.
Show results. Otherwise the project ends.
In the manager's hands, anyone gets trained hard.
If you push yourself too hard, don't come crying to me.

The grammar in this lesson

  1. 〜という わけではない — it's not that; it doesn't mean that — A plain form + という わけではない corrects a conclusion someone might draw: it is not (entirely) so.
  2. 〜にかかったら / 〜にかかっては — in (someone's) hands; once (someone) gets going — A person + にかかったら says that in that person's hands, anyone or anything ends up a certain way: they are that strong, skilled or strict.
  3. さもないと — otherwise; or else — After an instruction, さもないと introduces the bad result that will follow if it is not done.
  4. 〜ても 知らない — if you (do that), don't blame me — A verb's て-form + も 知らない warns someone who ignores advice that the consequences are their own.
  5. およそ — about; roughly — およそ goes before a number or an amount to say it is approximate.
