N5 · Lesson 6

How was it?

〜かった/〜でした ・ でも ・ どうでしたか

In this lesson, you will learn to talk about the past with adjectives and nouns (it was fun, it wasn't cold, it was rainy), to ask how something went, and to join ideas with 'but' and 'and then'. You will also meet Minju.

By the end you will be able to say

The movie was very interesting.
The weather wasn't good.
It rained on Sunday.
How was the movie?
It was cold. But it was fun.

The grammar in this lesson

  1. い-adjectives in the past — Swap い for かった: 楽しい → 楽しかったです.
  2. Nouns and な-adjectives in the past — です becomes でした; the negative is じゃ なかったです.
  3. But: でも and が — でも starts a new sentence; が joins two in one.
  4. How is it? How was it? — 〜は どうですか / どうでしたか, answered with an adjective.
  5. And, and then: そして/それから — そして adds; それから says what came next.
