N5 · Lesson 17

I think, she said

〜と 思います ・ 〜と 言います ・ 〜でしょう/だろう ・ たぶん

In this lesson, you will learn to say what you think, to pass on what someone else said, to say what will probably happen the way a weather forecast does, and to soften a guess with たぶん, while a typhoon heads toward the class trip to Hokkaido.

By the end you will be able to say

I think Hokkaido is cold.
The teacher said, "The trip is next week."
It will probably snow tonight.
I think it'll probably be fine.
"Typhoon" is 台風 in Japanese.

The grammar in this lesson

  1. 〜と 思います: I think — Plain form + と 思います says what you think.
  2. 〜と 言います: say, quote, call — と marks what someone said; 〜と 言います also gives the name of a thing.
  3. 〜でしょう / 〜だろう: probably — Plain form + でしょう says something will probably happen or is probably so.
  4. たぶん: probably — たぶん early in the sentence, with でしょう or と 思います at the end, makes a guess.
