Japanese from zero · N3 Lesson 6

As much as

〜ほど ・ 〜ほど〜ない ・ 〜くらい ・ 〜よりも ・ 〜ば〜ほど

In this lesson, you will learn to compare places and things with ほど and くらい, to say one thing is not as crowded, as big or as expensive as another, to make a comparison stronger with よりも, and to say 'the more …, the more …' with 〜ば〜ほど. The five friends spend a day of Golden Week in Kamakura.

By the end you will be able to say

Today isn't as hot as yesterday.
The station was as crowded as the morning rush.
Kamakura was even more crowded than I thought.
The more you practice, the better you get.
The more people there are, the higher the prices get.

The grammar in this lesson

  1. 〜ほど〜ない — not as … as; ほど — so … that — Noun + ほど + a negative says one thing does not reach another (not as … as); after a verb or adjective, ほど says how far something goes.
  2. 〜くらい / 〜ぐらい — about; as … as; so … that — After a number, くらい or ぐらい means 'about'; after a noun it means 'as … as'; after a verb or adjective it says how far something goes.
  3. 〜よりも — even more than; rather than (review) — よりも is より with も for emphasis: B よりも says A goes even further than B.
  4. 〜ば〜ほど — the more …, the more … — Say a verb or adjective twice, first in the ば form and then in the plain form + ほど: the more you do it, the more something else changes.
