Japanese from zero · N2 Lesson 42

Every form compared (1)

In this lesson, you will learn to choose the right form when several N2 patterns look alike: the ways to give a reason, the ways to say from whose point of view, the ways to say 'not only', and the ways to say 'despite' or 'regardless'. Ryo's first job interview is next week, and Lisa coaches him at café みどり, the way Ai once coached her.

By the end you will be able to say

It's precisely because I have the experience that I want this job.
Seen from the company's side, late-night experience is useful.
On top of the register, I clean the shop too.
Anyone can apply, whatever their faculty.
Since I'm applying, I'll prepare seriously.

The grammar in this lesson

  1. Reasons compared: からこそ / だけに / ばかりに / せいか / ものだから / ことだから / 以上は — Seven ways to give a reason, each with its own color: stressed, natural, regretted, unsure, excused, from character, or binding.
  2. Viewpoints compared: からすると / から見ると / から言うと / にしたら / 上 / の上では — Six ways to say from whose point of view, or in what terms, a judgment is made.
  3. 'Not only' compared: ばかりか / のみならず / に限らず / はもとより / どころか / に加えて — Five ways to add a second thing to the first, and どころか, which can turn the first thing upside down.
  4. Despite and regardless compared: にも関わらず / に関わらず / を問わず / ものの / つつ / 反面 — Three ways to say 'despite' or 'although', two ways to say 'regardless of', and 反面 for the other side of one thing.
