New Year at the Satos'

〜合う ・ 〜込む ・ 〜切れない ・ 〜たて ・ 〜っぱなし

In this lesson, you will learn five endings that join onto the ます stem of a verb: 〜合う (together, each other), 〜込む (into; for a long time), 〜切れない (too much to finish), 〜たて (fresh from) and 〜っぱなし (left that way). Lisa goes back to the Satos' house for New Year with Minju.

By the end you will be able to say

Let's all talk it over.
Grandma simmered the vegetables.
There's so much food I can't eat it all.
Mochi fresh from pounding is delicious.
The kotatsu has been left on.

The grammar in this lesson

  1. 〜合う — together; each other — ます stem + 合う means people do something with each other or share it: 話し合う (talk it over).
  2. 〜込む — into; deeply, for a long time — ます stem + 込む adds 'into' (詰め込む, pack in) or 'deeply, for a long time' (煮込む, simmer).
  3. 〜切れない — too much to finish — ます stem + 切れない says you can't do something all the way: 食べ切れない (too much to eat).
  4. 〜たて — fresh from; just done — ます stem + たて means something has just been made or done: 作りたて (freshly made).
  5. 〜っぱなし — left that way — ます stem + っぱなし says something was left on, open or out, usually when it shouldn't be.
