The first meeting

〜を踏まえて ・ 〜いかんでは ・ 〜か否か ・ 〜はさておき ・ 〜に即して

In this lesson, you will learn the language of meetings: to build on what came before with 〜を踏まえて, to say an outcome depends on something with 〜いかんでは, to say 'whether or not' formally with 〜か否か, to set a point aside for now with 〜はさておき, and to say a plan fits the facts with 〜に即して. Lisa sits in on her first department meeting, where she takes the notes.

By the end you will be able to say

Let's talk it over, building on last time's discussion.
Depending on this quarter's results, we will end the contract.
We will decide whether or not to continue the business.
Leaving the details aside, let's reach a conclusion.
We make plans in line with the actual situation.

The grammar in this lesson

  1. 〜を踏まえて — building on; taking into account — A noun + を踏まえて says the next step stands on something already established: a discussion, results, opinions.
  2. 〜いかんでは / 〜いかんだ — depending on — A noun + いかんでは says the outcome turns on that thing; 〜いかんだ at the end says everything depends on it.
  3. 〜か否か — whether or not — A plain form + か否か means 'whether or not', the formal way to say 〜かどうか.
  4. 〜はさておき — setting (that) aside — A noun + はさておき sets a topic aside for now so the speaker can move on to what matters first.
  5. 〜に即して — in line with; in keeping with — A noun + に即して says something is done to fit the actual facts, situation or rules.
