Japanese from zero · N3 Lesson 25

No need to cry

〜ことは ない ・ どうしても ・ ついに ・ つまり

In this lesson, you will learn to say there's no need to do something with 〜ことは ない, to say 'no matter what' with どうしても, to say 'at last' with ついに, and to sum things up with つまり. Lisa tells Minju that Tanaka and Sakura are going out, and Minju takes the news with grace.

By the end you will be able to say

There's no need to cry.
There's no need for you to worry, Lisa.
No matter what, I just can't dislike those two.
At last, I passed the exam!
In other words, the two of them are happy, right?

The grammar in this lesson

  1. No need to: 〜ことは ない — Dictionary form + ことは ない says there's no need to do something; it comforts or reassures.
  2. No matter what: どうしても — どうしても means 'at any cost' with a wish, and 'just can't, however hard I try' with a negative.
  3. At last: ついに — ついに says something finally happened after a long time or a long wait.
  4. In other words: つまり — つまり sums up or restates what was just said: 'in other words', 'in short', 'so'.
