Japanese from zero · N1 Lesson 41

Home to Seattle

〜ぶる ・ 〜がましい ・ 〜て敵わない ・ まるっきり ・ 〜からある/〜からする

In this lesson, you will learn to say someone is acting a part with 〜ぶる, that something has an unwelcome air with 〜がましい, that something is more than you can stand with 〜て敵わない, that something is completely so with まるっきり, and that an amount is that big or more with 〜からある, 〜からする and 〜からの. It is October of Lisa's second year at work, and she is home in Seattle for the first time since she joined the company, on a business trip with Ai.

By the end you will be able to say

My brother is always playing the big brother and asking me all sorts of things.
There is nothing pushy about my parents.
I'm so jet-lagged I can hardly stand how sleepy I am.
My brother said even my English is completely like a Japanese person's.
At a shop downtown, a teapot costs three hundred dollars or more.

The grammar in this lesson

  1. 〜ぶる — to act as if you were ... — A noun or an adjective's stem + ぶる says someone puts on the air of something, acting a part they have not earned.
  2. 〜がましい — with an unwelcome air of ... — A noun or a verb's stem + がましい makes an い-adjective saying something has an unwelcome air of that thing.
  3. 〜て敵わない — more than I can stand — The て-form + 敵わない says a feeling or a situation is so strong you can hardly bear it.
  4. まるっきり — completely; (not) at all — まるっきり, a casual word, says something is completely so, or with a negative, not at all.
  5. 〜からある / 〜からする / 〜からの — as much as ... (or more) — A number + からある, からする or からの stresses that an amount is large: that much, or even more.
