〜を めぐって ・ 〜に 関わる ・ いわゆる ・ 〜といった ・ 及び

In this lesson, you will learn to name what a debate is about with 〜を めぐって, to say that something affects a person's life or future with 〜に 関わる, to bring in a term everyone uses with いわゆる, to give examples of a kind of thing with 〜といった, and to join nouns in written Japanese with 及び. The labor shortage is a problem that affects life in town.
This is what people call the labor shortage.
We'll write about problems such as wages and aging.
The theme is 'The Labor Shortage and Wages.'

The grammar in this lesson

  1. 〜を めぐって — over; surrounding (a debate or a dispute) — A noun + を めぐって names the issue that a debate, a dispute or a struggle centers on; before a noun it becomes を めぐる.
  2. 〜に 関わる — to affect; to touch on (something that matters) — A noun + に 関わる says something reaches into a person's life, health or future and affects it.
  3. いわゆる — what is called; the so-called — いわゆる comes right before a term that everyone uses, to say 'what people call ...'.
  4. 〜といった — such as; like (examples of a kind) — A や B といった + a noun gives a few examples, then names the kind of thing they are.
  5. 及び — and (in written Japanese) — 及び joins nouns in formal, written Japanese: titles, rules, forms and notices.
