Japanese from zero · N3 Lesson 4

Do it over, finish it

〜直す ・ 〜上げる / 〜切る ・ 〜とおりに ・ 〜て ごらん

In this lesson, you will learn to say that you redo something with 〜直す, that you finish a piece of work or get all the way through something with 〜上げる and 〜切る, that you do something exactly the way it was shown with 〜とおりに, and how a senpai tells a kohai to give something a try with 〜て ごらん. Lisa's first draft comes back from Matsumoto covered in red.

By the end you will be able to say

I'll rewrite my draft the way my senpai told me.
I'll finish writing the article tonight.
I read this book all the way to the end.
Try reading it aloud.
In the middle of the night, my draft was finally done.

The grammar in this lesson

  1. 〜直す — to do over; to redo — ます stem + 直す means doing something again to fix it or to do it better.
  2. 書き上げる / 読み切る — finishing; to the end — ます stem + 上げる means finishing a piece of work; ます stem + 切る means getting all the way through something.
  3. 〜とおりに — just as; the way — Plain verb, or noun + の, + とおりに means doing something exactly the way it was said, shown or written.
  4. 〜て ごらん — try (doing it) — て-form + ごらん is a warm 'try it and see', said by someone older or senior.
