N5 · Lesson 23

While, too much, I plan to

〜ながら ・ 〜すぎます ・ 〜つもりです ・ で (by means of)

In this lesson, you will learn to say what you do while doing something else, that something is too much, what you plan to do, and how you do things: by bus, with a pencil, in Japanese. The friends talk about their summer vacation plans, and Lisa decides to look for a part-time job.

By the end you will be able to say

I eat while watching TV.
This shirt is too expensive.
I plan to get a part-time job over summer vacation.
I go to the university by bicycle every morning.
I plan to study kanji every night.

The grammar in this lesson

  1. While doing: 〜ながら — ます-stem + ながら: you do one thing while you do the main thing.
  2. Too much: 〜すぎます — ます-stem or adjective stem + すぎます: too much, more than is good.
  3. I plan to: 〜つもりです — Plain verb + つもりです says what you plan or intend to do.
  4. で: by, with, in (how you do it) — で after a tool, a vehicle or a language says how something is done.
