Japanese from zero · N4 Lesson 10

I heard that…

〜そうだ (hearsay) ・ 〜と 聞いた ・ 〜と 言われて いる ・ 〜と いう/〜って

In this lesson, you will learn to pass on news you heard, to say who you heard it from, to say what people in general say, and to name things with と いう and the casual って. While the friends set up for the 学園祭, Ryo brings a rumor about Tanaka and Sakura.

By the end you will be able to say

I hear it's going to rain tomorrow.
I heard from Ai that the immigration office isn't crowded in the morning.
Midori's cake is said to be delicious.
I work at a café called Midori.
Is that rumor true?

The grammar in this lesson

  1. I hear: 〜そうだ (hearsay) — A plain form + そうです passes on something you heard: 'I hear that…', 'they say…'.
  2. I heard that: 〜と 聞いた — A plain form + と 聞きました says what you heard; 〜から says who from.
  3. It is said: 〜と 言われて いる — A plain form + と 言われて います says what people in general say or believe.
  4. Called: 〜と いう/〜って — A name + と いう + noun is 'a ___ called…'; って is the casual と いう, and also quotes.
