Making the case

〜というものだ ・ 〜というものではない ・ 〜からといって ・ 〜ことにはならない

In this lesson, you will learn to say what something truly is with 〜というものだ, to push back on an idea that is too simple with 〜というものではない, to say 'just because' with 〜からといって, and to say that a fact does not prove a conclusion with 〜ことにはならない. In the second half of the group discussion, Lisa argues her case and the group reaches one conclusion.

By the end you will be able to say

It's not as simple as just hiring more people.
Just because someone is foreign doesn't mean they can't do the job.
Failing once doesn't mean you're no good.
Reaching one conclusion together: that's what a team is.
What counts in hiring is ability, more than nationality.

The grammar in this lesson

  1. 〜というものだ — that's what ... (truly) is — 〜というものだ states what something truly is, as a general truth, often with feeling.
  2. 〜というものではない — it's not as simple as — 〜というものではない pushes back on an idea that sounds right but is too simple.
  3. 〜からといって — just because — 〜からといって takes a reason and denies that it leads where people expect.
  4. 〜ことにはならない — that doesn't mean; that doesn't count as — 〜ことにはならない says a fact does not prove a conclusion, or does not count as done.
