Japanese from zero · N3 Lesson 16

Thanks to, because of

〜おかげで ・ 〜せいで ・ 〜結果 ・ 〜ことから

In this lesson, you will learn to say what a good result is thanks to with 〜おかげで, to say what is to blame for a bad one with 〜せいで, to report what you found out with 〜結果, and to say where a name or a conclusion comes from with 〜ことから. It is August: Lisa works at café みどり and writes the newspaper's summer feature on the history of her town.

By the end you will be able to say

Thanks to the station being built, the town grew.
Because so many houses were built, the forest got smaller.
After looking into the old records, I found out the reason for the town's name.
It came to be called みどり町 because there was a big forest.
Thanks to the club, my Japanese has improved.

The grammar in this lesson

  1. 〜おかげで — thanks to — 〜おかげで gives the cause of a good result, with a feeling of thanks.
  2. 〜せいで — because of (the blame) — 〜せいで gives the cause of a bad result and puts the blame on it.
  3. 〜結果 — as a result of (doing) — A verb in the た-form + 結果, or a noun + の 結果, says what came out of doing something.
  4. 〜ことから — from the fact that — A plain sentence + ことから gives the fact that a name or a conclusion comes from.
