Japanese from zero · N3 Lesson 28

Instead, and who it's for

〜代わりに / 〜にかわって ・ 〜向け ・ 〜向き ・ 〜的

In this lesson, you will learn to say that you do something instead of someone or something else, who a thing is made for, who a thing suits, and how to turn a noun into a な-adjective with 的. Matsumoto is in Tokyo for job interviews, so Lisa edits the January issue in his place and plans a page for new students.

By the end you will be able to say

I'll edit the January issue instead of my senpai.
I'll explain in place of the teacher.
I'm making a page for new students.
This dish is good for beginners.
Personally, I like this shop.

The grammar in this lesson

  1. 〜代わりに / 〜にかわって — instead of; in place of — Noun + の 代わりに or a plain verb + 代わりに means 'instead of' (or 'in return for'); person + にかわって means 'in someone's place'.
  2. 〜向け — made for; aimed at — Noun + 向け says who something was made for: 外国人向けの 本 (a book for foreigners).
  3. 〜向き — suited to; good for — Noun + 向き says that something suits a kind of person or use, whoever it was made for.
  4. 〜的 — -ic, -al: making な-adjectives — Noun + 的 makes a な-adjective (国際的な 町) or, with に, an adverb (個人的に).
