The newspaper club

〜について ・ 〜によると ・ 〜として ・ 〜という ことだ

In this lesson, you will learn to say what something is about with 〜について, where a piece of news comes from with 〜によると, in what role someone acts with 〜として, and to report what you have heard with 〜という ことだ. You will also meet Matsumoto, a fourth-year student and the editor of the university's newspaper club, and learn how to speak to a senpai.

By the end you will be able to say

The newspaper club writes about the university and the town.
According to the weather forecast, it will rain tomorrow.
I'll write articles as an exchange student.
According to the news, the trains have stopped.
As the editor, I decide what goes in the paper.

The grammar in this lesson

  1. 〜について — about — Noun + について means 'about' a topic, with verbs of talking, thinking and writing.
  2. 〜によると / 〜によれば — according to — Noun + によると names the source of what you heard; the sentence ends in そうだ or という ことだ.
  3. 〜として — as (a role) — Noun + として says in what role or position someone acts: 編集長として, as the editor.
  4. 〜という ことだ — they say; that means — Plain form + という ことだ reports what you heard or read, or sums up what a fact means.
