Minju's offer

〜に決まって いる ・ 〜に相違ない ・ 〜ことだから ・ 〜も当然だ/〜て当然だ/〜のももっともだ

In this lesson, you will learn to say something is bound to be so with 〜に決まって いる, to state a firm conclusion in writing with 〜に相違ない, to make a guess from what you know of someone with 〜ことだから, and to say a reaction is only natural with 〜のも当然だ, 〜て当然だ and 〜のも もっともだ. It is late December, and Minju has news from a company in Seoul.

By the end you will be able to say

Knowing Minju, I was sure she'd pass.
It's only natural that her parents are happy.
It's understandable that she can't decide.
This is without doubt a good company.
Practice every day, and of course you'll get better.

The grammar in this lesson

  1. 〜に決まって いる — is bound to; of course it's — The plain form or a noun + に決まって いる says the speaker is sure something is so.
  2. 〜に相違ない — without doubt (written) — 〜に相違ない is the formal, written way to say 'there is no doubt that'; in talk, に 違いない.
  3. 〜ことだから — knowing (someone) — A person + の ことだから says 'knowing what they are like', then makes a guess about what they will do.
  4. 〜のも当然だ / 〜て当然だ / 〜のも もっともだ — it's only natural — 〜のも 当然だ and 〜て 当然だ say a result is only natural; 〜のも もっともだ says a reaction is understandable.
