N5 · Lesson 3

My day

〜ます/〜ません

In this lesson, you will learn to talk about the things you do every day — when you get up, go to school, eat, and go to sleep — and to say how often you do them.

By the end you will be able to say

I get up at six every day.
I go to sleep at ten.
I go to school.
I don't watch TV very much.
I don't read the newspaper at all.

The grammar in this lesson

  1. 〜ます/〜ません — the polite verb ending — Turn any action into a polite sentence: I do it, I don't do it.
  2. を — marking the direct object — The thing that receives the action: what you eat, drink, or read.
  3. Time + に — a specific point in time — 六時に, 何時に — に marks a clock time, but not a relative word like 毎日.
  4. へ/に 行きます・来ます・帰ります — go, come, go home — Say where you're going, coming from, or heading home to.
  5. いつも・ときどき・あまり・ぜんぜん — how often — Always, sometimes, not very, not at all — and which ones need a negative verb.
