Japanese from zero · N2 Lesson 36

The final interview

〜に向かって ・ 拝見する/伺う/申し上げる/〜でございます ・ 〜と同時に ・ 〜ふうに/〜というふうに ・ 〜に応えて

In this lesson, you will learn to say what you are working toward with 〜に向かって, to talk about yourself in the humble keigo of a final interview (拝見する, 伺う, 申し上げる, 〜でございます), to say that two things happen or are true at once with 〜と同時に, to explain how you see something with 〜ふうに and 〜というふうに, and to talk about living up to hopes with 〜に応えて. It is March, and Lisa has her final interview at Ai's company.

By the end you will be able to say

I'll work hard toward a job that links Japan and the US.
At the internship, I heard people talk about every side of the trade business.
The internship was hard, and at the same time I learned a lot from it.
This is how I see it.
I hope to live up to everyone's expectations and get results.

The grammar in this lesson

  1. 〜に向かって — toward; facing — A noun + に向かって is the way you face or speak, or the goal you work toward.
  2. 拝見する・伺う・申し上げる・〜でございます — the keigo of a final interview — In a final interview you lower your own actions with 拝見する (look), 伺う (hear, ask) and 申し上げる (say), and staff use 〜でございます for です.
  3. 〜と同時に — at the same time as; and at the same time — 〜と同時に says two things happen at the same moment, or that one thing is two things at once.
  4. 〜ふうに / 〜というふうに — in this way; in the way that — ふう means 'way': こういう ふうに is 'like this', and a quote + というふうに is 'in the way that ...'.
  5. 〜に応えて — in response to; living up to — 応える is to answer what someone hopes for: 期待に 応える is 'live up to expectations', and 〜に応えて is 'in response to'.
