Japanese from zero · N3 Lesson 7

Not only

〜だけでなく ・ 〜ばかりでなく ・ 〜上に ・ 〜はもちろん ・ 〜も〜ば〜も

In this lesson, you will learn to praise a place the way a newspaper does: to say 'not only A but also B' with だけでなく and ばかりでなく, to add one more good point with 上に, to put the obvious thing first with はもちろん, and to list two points with 〜も〜ば〜も. Lisa's article about café みどり is in print.

By the end you will be able to say

The coffee is good, of course, and so is the cake.
This café is close to the station, and on top of that, the menu has lots of choices.
Not only the taste but the atmosphere is good too.
Sakura draws pictures, and she makes coffee too.
Not only people from the town but students come too.

The grammar in this lesson

  1. 〜だけでなく / 〜ばかりでなく — not only … but also — A だけでなく B も says A is true and B is true as well; ばかりでなく means the same and sounds more written.
  2. 〜上に — on top of that; besides — Plain form + 上に adds a second point that goes the same way as the first.
  3. 〜はもちろん — of course, and also … — A は もちろん、B も says A is obviously true, and so is B.
  4. 〜も〜ば〜も — both … and … — A も (ば form), B も … puts two points side by side, often two kinds of praise or two complaints.
