Choosing the dress

〜ぐるみ ・ 〜といったらない/〜のなんのって ・ なんという/なんと/なんて ・ 〜にもほどがある

In this lesson, you will learn to say 'the whole family' or 'the whole town' with 〜ぐるみ, to say something is beyond words with 〜といったらない and 〜のなんのって, to cry 'how beautiful!' with なんて, なんと and なんという, and to say someone has gone too far with 〜にもほどがある. It is late February, and Sakura, Ai and Lisa go shopping for the wedding dress.

By the end you will be able to say

Ai's and Sakura's families are friends, whole families together.
There's a limit to how long you can dither.
What a lovely dress!
I couldn't be happier.
On the wedding day, everyone comes dressed up.

The grammar in this lesson

  1. 〜ぐるみ — the whole ..., all together — A group noun + ぐるみ says the whole group is in it together.
  2. 〜といったらない / 〜のなんのって — beyond words — An adjective + といったらない, or a plain form + のなんのって, says something is so much so that there are no words for it.
  3. なんて / なんと / なんという — how ...! what a ...! — なんて or なんと before an adjective, and なんという before a noun, make an exclamation.
  4. 〜にもほどがある — there's a limit to ...; that's going too far — A verb's dictionary form or a noun + にもほどがある says something has gone past what anyone can accept.
