Every form compared (3)
In this lesson, you will learn to hear which world a form belongs to, the contract, the old signboard, the news or a chat between friends; to choose between the もの and こと families; to use the paired forms that say 'whichever' or 'one thing after another'; and to tell the ways of saying 'even if' and 'if only' apart. It is the night before Tanaka and Sakura's wedding, and Minju, Ryo and Ai help Lisa practice her speech.
By the end you will be able to say
The grammar in this lesson
- Registers compared: ものとする / べからず / とされる against ってば / ぞ / さ / わ / やしない — The same idea sounds different in a contract, on an old signboard, in the news and between friends.
- The もの and こと families: ものを / もので / ものとして / ものと思われる / ないものか against こととて / ことのないように / ことなしに / こともあって — Five もの forms (regret, excuse, treat as, a written guess, a wish) and four こと forms (a reason asking for understanding, a warning, 'without', one reason among others).
- Paired forms compared: であれ〜であれ / ようが〜ようが / ようと〜まいと / なり〜なり / だの〜だの / やれ〜やれ / わ〜わで / といい〜といい / といわず〜といわず / かれ〜かれ / つ〜つ — Forms that come in pairs to say 'whichever', 'one thing after another', 'A or B or something', or 'both ways'.
- 'If' and regret compared: たところで / たら最後 / ばそれまでだ / たら〜たで / たら〜ところだ / ものを / だろうに — Even if it won't help, once it happens there's no going back, that's the end of it, so be it, what nearly happened, and what could have been.
