The た-form

食べた ・ 〜た ことが あります ・ 〜たり〜たり ・ 〜た 後で ・ 〜た ほうが いいです

In this lesson, you will learn the た-form of verbs and use it to talk about things you have done before, to list a few things you did, to say what you do after something else, and to give advice. Lisa is over her cold, and the friends compare what they have done.

By the end you will be able to say

I have never climbed a mountain in Japan.
I did things like shopping and eating sushi.
I went to bed after taking my medicine.
You should get plenty of sleep.
Let's go eat after the test.

The grammar in this lesson

  1. The た-form — 食べた, 行った — The た-form is the plain past, made exactly like the て-form with て → た and で → だ.
  2. 〜た ことが あります — have done (experience) — た-form + ことが あります says you have done something at least once in your life.
  3. 〜たり〜たり します — things like A and B — た-form + り, twice, then します, gives a few examples of what you do or did.
  4. 〜た 後で — after doing — た-form + 後で says the second action comes after the first.
  5. 〜た ほうが いいです / 〜ない ほうが いいです — you'd better — た-form + ほうが いいです gives advice to do something; ない-form + ほうが いいです gives advice not to.
