It was 2,519 trillion yen, up 11.0% from a year earlier, a record high.

    Show answer

Stocks and investment funds. Stocks rose 47.0% to 486 trillion yen, and investment funds rose 36.8% to 193 trillion yen.

    Show answer

Not only new purchases but also rises in the price of stocks already held push the balance up directly. Conversely, if the market falls, assets shrink the same way.

    Show answer

The balance was 1,132 trillion yen, up only 0.5% from a year earlier. Its share was 44.9%, still the largest item.

    Show answer

The preference for deposits is still deep-rooted. At the end of March, stocks made up 16.7% in Japan, compared with 43.4% in the United States and 25.5% in the euro area.

    Show answer

Because rising stock prices mean nothing to households that hold no stocks or funds, and with prices still rising, many people feel their savings shrinking.

    Example answer

I think it is best to keep the money needed for daily life in deposits and invest part of the rest for the long term, because that guards against a market fall while avoiding the erosion caused by rising prices.
