厚生労働省によると、9月1日の時点で、全国の100歳以上の人は10万7677人だった。前の年より7914人多く、初めて10万人をこえた。

このうち女性は9万4298人で、男性は1万3379人だ。100歳以上の人の87.6%が女性ということになる。

老人福祉法ができた昭和38年には、100歳以上の人は全国で153人しかいなかった。その後、昭和56年に千人をこえ、平成10年には1万人、平成24年には5万人を上回った。
