文化庁は今月2日、令和7年度の「国語に関する世論調査」の結果を公表した。調査は今年1月から3月にかけて、全国の16歳以上を対象に郵送で行われ、3777人が回答した。

スマートフォンやパソコンで文字を入力するのが当たり前になった今、手で字を書く機会はどれほど残っているのか。日常生活で文字を手書きする機会が「よくある」「時々ある」と答えた人は、合わせて69.6%にのぼった。

手書きの機会が最も多いのは10代

年齢別に見ると、手書きの機会が「ある」と答えた人の割合が最も高かったのは16~19歳で、87.5%に達した。学校で字を書く場面が多い世代であることが、影響しているのだろう。2番目は40代の73.2%だった。

手書きの習慣を、これからの時代も「大切にすべきだと思う」人は80.4%だった。理由として最も多く挙げられたのは、「漢字などを正確に身に付けることにつながる」で70.7%、続いて「手書きの文字には個性が表れ、印刷にはない気持ちを込められる」が68.2%だった。

年賀状や挨拶状などのはがきについても、文字が全て印刷されたものより、手書きされたものや手書きが一言加えられたものの方が良いと答えた人が82.3%を占めた。全て印刷されたものが良いという人は、わずか3.2%にとどまった。

縦書きに触れるのは「紙の本」で

縦書きで文字を読んだり書いたりする機会が「ある」人は67.3%だった。その場所としては「紙の本・辞書」が69.6%で最も多く、「紙の新聞」が58.7%で続いた。縦書きの習慣を大切にすべきだと考える人は57.8%と、手書きに比べると低かったが、16~19歳では74.1%と高かった。

デジタル化が進んでも、若い世代ほど手書きや縦書きに触れる機会が多いという結果は、意外に感じられるかもしれない。ただし、その多くは学校の中での話だ。社会に出た後も、手で書く文化をどう残していくかが問われている。
